GST Calculator India: What It Is and Why You Need One
A GST calculator is a simple online tool that tells you how much Goods and Services Tax is included in, or should be added to, the price of any product or service. Whether you are a shopkeeper preparing an invoice, a freelancer quoting a client, a salaried person checking a restaurant bill or a student learning how indirect tax works, this free online GST calculator gives you the answer in a second. It works as a rapid GST calculator: you type an amount, choose a rate and the result appears with charts, a tax breakup table and a slab comparison. You can then share the result on WhatsApp, copy it, or download it as a PDF or TXT file.
GST replaced a long list of indirect taxes such as excise duty, VAT, service tax and entry tax on 1 July 2017. It is administered by the GST Council, with rules and notifications published by CBIC and the GST Network (GSTN). Because the tax is charged at every step of the supply chain, even small mistakes in calculation can lead to wrong invoices, mismatched returns and notices. A reliable Indian GST calculator removes that risk.
GST Calculation Formula: How GST Is Calculated
The GST calculation formula is easy once you know whether your price is exclusive or inclusive of tax.
Formula to add GST
Final price = Original price + GST amount
Example: a laptop bag costs ₹2,000 before tax and the rate is 18%. GST = 2,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹360. Final price = ₹2,360.
Formula to remove GST
GST amount = Total price − Original price
Example: you paid ₹2,360 including 18% GST. Original price = 2,360 × 100 ÷ 118 = ₹2,000 and GST = ₹360. This is the working behind every reverse GST calculator. The GST calculator formula is the same whichever tool you use; only the user experience and extra features differ.
Current GST Rate Slabs in India (After GST 2.0)
On 22 September 2025, the changes decided by the 56th GST Council meeting came into effect and simplified the rate structure into two main slabs, 5% and 18%, plus a special 40% rate for sin and luxury goods. Nil-rated and exempt items stay at 0%, while precious metals and stones keep special low rates: 3% on gold and silver jewellery and 0.25% on rough diamonds. Most items that earlier fell in the 12% and 28% slabs moved to 5% or 18%. Some residual items were reported to retain legacy rates until further notification, so always confirm the rate of your specific HSN or SAC code.
| Slab | Typical items |
|---|---|
| 0% | Fresh vegetables, fresh milk, bread, notebooks, individual life and health insurance |
| 5% | Edible oil, ghee, butter, toothpaste, shampoo, tractors |
| 18% | Mobile phones, air conditioners, cement, small cars, IT services |
| 40% | Aerated drinks, large cars, yachts, casinos, online money gaming |
Use the "Same amount at every GST slab" chart and the slab comparison table in the calculator to see how much more or less tax you would pay at each rate.
18 Percent GST Calculator: Worked Examples
Since 18% is the standard rate and applies to a large share of goods and services, many people search for an "18 GST calculator". The shortcut is simple: multiply by 0.18 to get the tax, or by 1.18 to get the final price.
- ₹1,000 → GST ₹180 → total ₹1,180
- ₹7,500 → GST ₹1,350 → total ₹8,850
- ₹50,000 → GST ₹9,000 → total ₹59,000
- Total ₹59,000 including GST → divide by 1.18 → base ₹50,000
For 5% GST, multiply by 0.05 (or 1.05 for the total). For 40%, multiply by 0.40 (or 1.40). These shortcuts are useful when you do not have a calculator at hand, but the tool above also gives you the CGST/SGST split and a printable record.
How to Remove GST from a Price (Reverse GST Calculator)
Many buyers and small businesses need to remove GST from an inclusive price, for example to book expenses, compare quotations or prepare a tax invoice. A very common error is to subtract 18% from the total. That is wrong, because the 18% was charged on the base price, which is smaller than the total. The correct method is to divide the total by (1 + rate ÷ 100), so ₹11,800 divided by 1.18 gives ₹10,000, not ₹9,676. Switch the tool to "Remove GST (Reverse)" mode, enter the inclusive amount and the rate, and it will show the base price and tax separately.
CGST, SGST and IGST: Which One Applies?
If the supplier and the place of supply are in the same state, the GST is split equally between the Centre (CGST) and the State (SGST), or UTGST in a Union Territory. A sale of ₹10,000 at 18% in Maharashtra therefore carries ₹900 CGST + ₹900 SGST. If the goods or services move from one state to another, the supplier charges IGST of ₹1,800, which the government later distributes between the Centre and the destination state. Imports are also subject to IGST. The calculator's "Same State" and "Other State" buttons apply the right split automatically. Intra-state and inter-state classification is based on the supplier's location and the place of supply, not on where the buyer lives.
GST Credit Calculator: Understanding Input Tax Credit (ITC)
Input Tax Credit allows a registered business to reduce its GST liability by the GST already paid on business purchases. Suppose you collected ₹18,000 of GST on sales and paid ₹12,000 of GST on purchases. Your net liability is only ₹6,000. This is what our GST credit calculator does, with the legal order of utilisation built in:
- IGST credit is used first against IGST liability, then CGST, then SGST.
- CGST credit is used against CGST liability, then IGST.
- SGST credit is used against SGST liability, then IGST.
- CGST credit can never be used against SGST, and SGST credit can never be used against CGST.
To claim ITC you need a valid tax invoice, the invoice must reflect in your GSTR-2B, goods or services must be received, the supplier must have actually paid the tax to the government, and you must claim within the time allowed under Section 16(4) (broadly, by 30 November following the financial year end or the date of filing the annual return, whichever is earlier). Credit is blocked for items listed under Section 17(5), such as food and beverages, club memberships and motor vehicles used for personal purposes. If you buy from an unregistered supplier or the supplier does not file returns, your credit may be denied, so reconcile purchases every month. Monthly GSTR-3B is generally due on the 20th of the following month.
GST Calculator for a Sole Trader / Sole Proprietor
Searches for a "sole trader GST calculator" usually come from people running a one-person business. In India this is a sole proprietorship, and the GST arithmetic is identical to any company. What matters for you is whether you need to register. Registration is generally mandatory once your aggregate turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods (₹20 lakh in special category states) or ₹20 lakh for services (₹10 lakh in special category states), and always for inter-state supplies of goods in most cases and for sellers on e-commerce platforms. You can also register voluntarily to claim input tax credit and look more credible to business customers.
Very small traders may choose the composition scheme, which allows them to pay a small flat percentage of turnover (commonly 1% for manufacturers and traders, 5% for restaurants and 6% for eligible service providers). Under composition you cannot collect GST separately from customers or claim ITC, so it works best when most of your customers are individuals. Use the "Add GST" mode to prepare a quotation and the "Remove GST" mode to back-calculate your real income from a tax-inclusive receipt.
Uber, Cab and App-Based Service GST
People also look for an "Uber GST calculator" to check the tax on ride-hailing bills. The calculation is the same: enter the fare and the rate shown on the invoice. If the fare already includes tax, use "Remove GST" to see the base fare. Who is liable to pay the tax and at what rate on app-based passenger transport depends on the service and the current notification, and ITC is often restricted for such services, so check your invoice and the latest CBIC notification before claiming anything in your books. Business travellers should also confirm that the invoice carries the company's GSTIN if they wish to claim credit where it is allowed.
Is This the Same as Zoho, TaxAdda, ClearTax or Paisabazaar GST Calculators?
Several companies such as Zoho, TaxAdda, ClearTax and Paisabazaar offer their own GST calculators. PublicCentral is independent and not affiliated with any of them. Because GST law prescribes one calculation method, every correct tool returns the same figures for the same price and rate. What this page adds is a built-in GST credit (ITC) calculator, a side-by-side comparison of all slabs, a visual breakup, and one-click share or download in PDF and TXT. You need no app download: the calculator is mobile friendly, loads quickly even on slow networks and can be added to your phone's home screen like a GST calculator app.
Common GST Calculation Mistakes to Avoid
- Subtracting the GST percentage from an inclusive total instead of dividing by (1 + rate).
- Applying 18% to goods that are actually taxed at 5% or 40%. Check the HSN/SAC code.
- Charging CGST + SGST on an inter-state sale, or IGST on a local sale.
- Claiming ITC without matching the invoice in GSTR-2B.
- Forgetting that MRP is already inclusive of GST.
- Using old 12% or 28% rates on invoices dated after 22 September 2025.
- Rounding each line differently from the invoice total. Follow your accounting software's rounding rule consistently.
